Jamaica Day

Netball at Jamaica Day Community Festival 2010

Supported by Greater Manchester County Association

21st August saw the 2nd Jamaica Day Community Festival held at Longford Park Athletics Stadium in Manchester.

The Jamaica Day Community Festival showcases and promotes opportunities, access and achievement within the community.

Jamaican culture provides a backdrop to a wide variety of activities for all communities to interact with one another and with service providers, while enjoying a fabulous day out with friends and family.

In this way it seeks to strengthen cultural and intergenerational bonds, and promote our common development to contribute to safe, happy and prosperous communities.

Netball within Jamaica is a massive sport thanks to the success of the Sunshine Girls. So the event organisers were keen for the Netball to be an integral part for the event.

Flava Netball Club along with support from Manchester NDO Helen Davies organised and coordinated the netball tournament. After a long morning of marking out the netball court in an array of different colours the netball tournament kicked off!

4 teams entered the competition with a mixed team also registering – however only 2 turned up on the day, this did not phase the organising team, additional people were recruited and extra teams were formed. The games were fun but definitely didn’t lack the competitive edge. Spectators were able to witness some great netball and have a few laughs also.

A trophy and medals were presented to all netballers at the closing ceremony.

Helen Davies (Manchester NDO)

“This years Jamaica Day was fantastic. We were very lucky with the weather – you would have thought we were actually in Jamaica at one point and not Trafford! A massive thank you goes out to Flava Netball Club and Greater Manchester County Netball Association for supporting the tournament. We are all looking forward to Jamaica Day 2011!!!”
